Casinos and betting rackets in Delhi-NCR drive city’s gambling businesses during Diwali

By Avtar Singh

As per the Public Gambling Act of 1867, running a public gaming house is not legal in the Indian subcontinent. The short-term casinos and betting rackets across Delhi-NCR has driven city’s gambling businesses during Diwali season. This season is, however, considered as the peak season for Indian gambling. New players try their luck with games of chance in the weeks ahead of Diwali. Most of the operators who are hosting their organisations outside the country are engaged in using digital platforms and online apps.

These are helping them to hold the games of chance in the middle of a members-only community. In addition to this, the operators create exclusive clubs online which help their clients to place their bets in real time. PPpoker is one of these apps. It enables the players to host the card games where local players are being invited through their social media page. Websites like Williams Hill, 888casino, and 1xbet are offering live casino games.

While requesting anonymity, a senior officer of Delhi Police told Mail Today, ‘’We have inputs about gambling agents who are sharing links with businessmen of Delhi-NCR to play card games online, and huge money is being traded each night.’’ In adherence to the official, they used to rent a farmhouse or bungalow for organising the card-based games during the Diwali season. He admitted that the online players associated with most of the websites (being hosted from abroad) are difficult to crack down.
