Shillong, the capital city of Meghalaya, often referred to as ‘Scotland of the East’ since British Raj in India had a very unique gambling habit. Unlike the rest of the nation, which bets on fantasy teams in cricket or horse-racing or card games, the people of Shillong wakes up every morning and rush to a Tir/Teer Counter to bet on a number based on the dream they saw last night.
Sounds fun, right?
However, the myth has it that these dreams which the bettors bet on can be manipulated by dark powers that can be attained by worshiping snakes or by keeping them the chances of predicting the winning numbers in Shillong Teer gets more accurate.
History of Shillong Teer Gambling
No one really knows when it started other than in the early 20th century by the Khasi people of Meghalaya, who were finest archers and rained down arrows on British army when they tried to capture their homeland in their fight for resistance. They made quite a name for themselves but to keep those bow and arrow warriors entertained, the local administrators held many festivals where the archers would compete with each other in tournaments but soon betting found its way to the heart of it all. The spectators were more than just cheerers for the archers, with bets placed on the archers by the punters made the show all around even more exciting. The archers would also walk away with a commission and Shillong Teer gambling became evident.
What is Shillong Teer Gambling?
The modern day Teer Gambling in Shillong is very famous across the 11 districts of the state of Meghalaya. With over 1500 Teer counters being set up in Shillong itself, the governing body The Khasi Hills Bookie Welfare Association is expected to make more than some millions in a month, while there are around 5000 Teer counters can be found across Meghalaya.
However, the teer gambling was not legal since 1981 because the law and order in the state tried to round all the local dons who ran the gambling houses by fixing the results and in a way stealing away the hard earned money of the common people right below their eyes.
Ever since, it has been made legal by the state government under the Meghalaya Amusements and Betting Tax Act, 1982, the Teer counters have to obtain a yearly license from the tax department by paying an amount of INR 3000. Not only that the counters must also pay INR 20 every day for the archers’ daily allowance from their recorded earning of each day.
How to bet on the Shillong Teer?
The tickets are not so costly and can be easily obtained from INR 1 to 100 and if the winning number is predicted accurately one can even get a return of 80 times of the invested money for the first round and a return of 60 times of the invested money on the second round. The tickets can be easily bought from anywhere like a paan shop with a black board with numbers written on it with chalk hanging outside and a table and chair with a bunch of papers and a pen on the inside. The return on the tickets may vary as there were instances when people even got a return of 4000 times on the amount they bet with.
What are the rules of Shillong Teer gambling?
The rules are quite plain and simple. Before betting on the winning number one must try to remember the dream they had last night and based on what that person in the dream, they would pick the numbers assorted from each and every possible dream listed out and bet on those numbers.
Now, how the numbers are drawn or decided is the real play. Every day at 4:00 PM and 4:30 PM, 10 archers from five affiliated archery clubs with The Khasi Hills Bookie Welfare Association will gather around in a semi circle position at the Polo Ground, Shillong. The archers would fire 30 arrows each in 4 minutes and the last two digits of the total arrows fired will become the winning number for Round 1. For example, if 851 arrows of 1500 shots hit one number then the winning number of Round 1 will be 51.
Similarly, in the second round those 50 archers from those five affiliated clubs would now rain 20 arrows in 3 minutes to decide the winning numbers of Round 2. The officials of the game would count the arrows in front of everyone and announce the winning numbers and in less than five minutes, the winning numbers would spread across all the Teer counters and agents. The numbers are then displayed on those black boards written in chalk where the local people can see.
