Afghanistan tour of Ireland, 2018

Afghanistan vs Ireland, 2nd ODI

After succumbing to yet another defeat against Afghanistan, hosts Ireland will look to shrug off their abysmal run-of-form when they take on the Afghans in the second ODI on Wednesday.

Just like the T20I series, Afghanistan continued with their winning momentum with a 29-run win over the Irish in the first ODI Asghar Stanikzai’s team will look to close out the series with another impressive performance in the second ODI. While a lot was down to Irish batsmen’s technical deficiencies especially against spin, Afghanistan continues to make deep strides on their Irish sojourn.

Venue:- Civil Service Cricket Club, Belfast

Match Timings:- Wednesday, August 29, 2018, 03:15 PM IST

Irish bowlers, especially- Tim Murtagh (4-31) and Boyd Rankin (3-44) combined beautifully to claim seven Afghan wickets between them and despite half-centuries from Gulbadin Naib (64) and Hashmatullah Shahidi (54), restricted the visitors to a sub-par total of 9-227 in 20 overs.

Chasing 228, Ireland’s both openers were back in the hut in the first ten overs with skipper Stankazai throwing the ball to Mujeeb Ur Rahman at the start of the innings. Once, skipper Porterfield (16) was out, Ireland’s scoring-rate worsened accounting for Nial O’Brien (11) in the first of the two run-outs of their innings. Andrew Balbarnie scored a hard-fought 55 and when he was finally out in his umpteenth attempt for a sweep, it was all down to Gary Wilson with the equation down to 77 in the last ten overs. But the duo of Rashid (2-41) and Mujeeb (1-32) ensured they scored just 27 before the vile legspinner finished the game in two balls and assigning the hosts a morale shellacking 29-run defeat.
