JLT Cup, 2018
Queensland Bulls vs Tasmania, 1st Semi-Final
The first semi-final of the 2018 JLT Cup will see Queensland Bulls’ take on Tasmania Tigers’ in what is expected to be a humdinger of an encounter on Saturday.
Queensland Bulls’ finished at the bottom of the pile after a solitary win and quite ironically, it was against the same opposition [Victoria] that they beat in the qualifying finals to set-up the semi-final clash against Tasmania.
Where:- Drummoyne Oval, Sydney
When:-Saturday, October 06, 2018, 09:30 AM IST
Riding on a superlative batting performance that saw nearly every batsman (Sam Heazlett- 83, Chris Lynn- 68, Joe Burns- 80) got runs, the Bulls’ posted a mammoth 5-363 in 50 overs. Persistent rains during the inning-break forced the match to be reduced to 49 overs with Victoria requiring five runs less than the actual total to nail down the semi-final spot and with Calum Ferguson going full throttle, it looked like them achieving that.
But Mitchell Swepson [3-64] proved to be a game-changer in his second spell. He dismissed Alex Carey to trigger a sensational collapse as Victoria lost their last six wickets for 39 runs to hand the Chris Lynn-led side a semi-final spot.
Things would be much difficult for the Bulls’ though, in the semi-finals when they’ll be up against a Tasmania unit which finished the league-stage at the second spot. They’ll know by their group-stage experience when Ben McDermott’s 117, Jordan Silk’s 85 and Simon Milenko’s epic 29-ball-50 overhauled their target of 6-317.
Tasmania, too, would like to shrug off the five-wicket loss they suffered in the last league-stage match against table-toppers Western Australia when their bowlers in face of an onslaught from Marcus Stoinis failed to defend 8-290.
It would be a battle between two batting-heavy sides but ultimately the tea that bowls better will emerge as winners.
